Mi viaje de 8K (km) a Comala

8,428 km separate Madrid from Vancouver, Comalatechs headquarters, the company of which I will be the new CEO as of today. It’s a long road that I started to walk more than five years ago, when I met Roberto, its founder, owner and former CEO, for first time.

During that time, Comalatech has grown to become a company with sixteen employees – now seventeen with me – and 3 million dollar revenue per year, developing plugins that extend the functionalities of the Atlassian main products.

In 2017, the company turns 10, and in order to focus on the long-term vision of the company, Roberto has asked me to help him manage the new challenges Comalatech faces day by day:

  • Develop the company strategy: Diversify our portfolio or narrow it to focus on the most profitable products? Continue to be fully attached to Atlassian or to explore other platforms? The future presents many paths to follow and, we have to draw the map to reach our goal.
  • Scale the organization: With a growing staff and two development teams working in parallel, we have to improve our  workflows and coordination to help grow in future.
  • Improve internal and external communication: we have to be able to convey what we do and, above all, WHY we do it. Both within and outside the company.

And I have accepted the challenge. It will be a demanding job, but also exciting. Especially considering that Comalatech is a company that works 100% remotely. Although the core team is in Vancouver, it has employees in exotique places such as Australia, Estonia and Colindres, Cantabria.

I will miss my old comrades in Otogami and 8Kdata, but I am sure our paths will cross again in the future. We have not only shared a part of our career but also a set of values and a way of doing things that will come with us forever.

Those values are what have taken me to Comalatech, a company that has learned how to internalize perfectly that taking your work very seriously is not at odds with trying to have fun working, starting with knowing how to laugh at oneself. The video with which we have announced my hiring is already a full declaration of intentions:

This is how the masterpiece of Juan Rulfo begins, and also my new and THRILLING adventure. Many thanks to all who are still traveling with me.

Because some of my new fellows don’t speak Spanish. I have also written an English version of this blog post.

Y he aceptado el reto.
